Successful management of site waste has both environmental and financial consequences. New environmental legislation and the cost of handling waste are continuing to increase; an on-going priority is to improve our reporting processes so that we can better evaluate systems that will lead to a reduction in waste produced and removed from site.
By improving our processes in managing site waste we have been able to reduce the amount of plasterboard recycling by 17% to 3,900 tonnes, we have also increased the volume of material that is recycled on-site by 36% thereby reducing the amount of material going to landfill. During the year we have increased the number of sites that recycle wood and timber, and inert waste and top soil by 41% and 21% respectively. The re-use of demolition materials is site dependent this year we have recycled 144,731 tonnes of material. In line with new legislation from April 2008 all Bellway sites will have Site Waste Management Plans, this will further assist the efficient handling of site waste. |
