This year, there has been a lot of talk about the change required within the house building industry. Change to meet a growing demand for homes whilst addressing issues like flooding, a changing climate, waste, and the cost of travel – all issues that have gained significant media attention this year.

Whilst some of this talk has turned into requirements through law or planning; sustainability still represents a significant opportunity for home builders that can turn changing client expectations into reality.  This year Bellway has taken a step forward in recognising that its social and environmental responsibilities can represent opportunities for future business value. A mindset that we not only advocate, but believe - if delivered effectively - will be a key point of difference between house builders in years to come.

For Bellway, the evidence is within projects examples, as demonstrated within this report.  However, not all examples are fully representative of actions taken across the whole company – a point that we believe is true of many companies within this, and other sectors. Going forward it will be important for Bellway to demonstrate continuous improvement across all projects and regions.

What is encouraging is that internal systems set up within Bellway are resulting in improvements in many of the measures used to track performance.  Additional work on waste management, material use and energy should help improve these numbers further, as well as deliver cost savings and more sustainable homes.

We welcome the move to more accessible reporting on the website including more information within the Annual Report and Accounts – a step towards more integrated reporting of financial and non-financial information. External assurance of this information is something Bellway should consider in the future.
